2007-08 Project Details and Library Media Specialist Expectations
Project Goals

The Metronet Information Literacy Project (MILP) goals are:
  1. Improve the ability of participating 10th graders to conduct research by teaching them a process which involves the following five steps:  
    • Develop a Question
    • Gather and Evaluate information  
    • Conclude (formulate a conclusion) 
    • Communicate information and conclusion
    • Evaluate process and product
  2. Increase students’ understanding of the legal and ethical issues related to information use including plagiarism, copyright, and the responsible use of technology.
  3. Foster greater library media specialist-teacher collaboration and teamwork and promote the implementation of the MEMO/MLA “Recommended Standards for Information and Technology Literacy.”
  4. Demonstrate and stimulate increased levels of interlibrary cooperation among the types of libraries participating in this project: school library media centers, public libraries, and academic libraries.

LMS Participant Goals:

LMS will develop and refine their abilities to teach the following to students and teachers:

The Research Process
Improve the ability of students and teachers to conduct effective research by using a process that includes the following 5 steps:
  1. Question
  2. Gather and Evaluate
  3. Conclude
  4. Communicate
  5. Evaluate
Use Reliable Resources
Assist teachers and students to identify and use available, reliable resources whenever possible. This includes but is not limited to, electronic, human, and print. Collaboration will be modeled at all levels.

Responsible Use of Information and Technology
Promote understanding and practice responsible use of information and technology. Advise and assist  teachers in the creation of plagiarism-proof assignments. Help all involved to approach ethical use in the spirit of good citizenship rather than compliance.

LMS Participant Expectations:

Participants in the Information Literacy Project will receive use of a wireless computer and LCD Projector.  They will receive the assistance of student interns for 8-10 hours weekly.

Library media specialists will:

* Function as the Information Literacy ambassadors in their schools.

*Model and promote collaboration.

*Attend two day orientation session to be held on:
          Wednesday, September 12, 3-7 pm
           Saturday, September 15, 9-3 pm

    *Attend 8 monthly meetings/workshops to be held the second Wednesday of
     September, October, November, January, February, March, April and May.

    *Document achievement of personal/professional goals by developing skills
     and creating/teaching lessons and units related to the 3 Rs(see above) and
     posting regularly to a  project blog.

    * Complete project evaluations and  facilitate completion of student
       pre/posttests.

LMS will keep the hardware and software package as long as they continue to meet expectations. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of project equipment.
