MOST POPULAR RIF BOOKS (click on this link)

Welcome to our SPPS RIF (Reading is Fundamental) website!

Rif, the nation's largest literacy program, is a well-loved program here in Saint Paul. Saint Paul Public Schools has been participating in RIF since 2001. Last year we distributed over 109,000 books to 32,000 students.

By providing students high quality reading materials at no cost to them, and sharing with them the joys of starting a personal library, the RIF program is another strong SPPS source that promotes a love of reading in our students.

The 3 Key Components of RIF:

  1. Free books to children at no cost to them or their families
  2. Motivational activities that encourage joy in reading
  3. Parental involvement

RIF Site Coordinators ensure that:

  1. Children receive free books to take home at no cost to them or their families.
  2. Each child receives at least 1 book at each distribution.
  3. Children are able to choose books free of adult interference.
  4. 3 distributions are held to disseminate RIF books to the students at their site.
  5. Motivational activities (that are fun) always occur in conjunction with each book distribution.
  6. Only RIF children receive RIF books, and no books go to teachers or are used for classroom collections.
  7. All distributions are held at least one month apart.
  8. Parents are notified of upcoming RIF opportunities and are invited to participate as  volunteers. School or community volunteers are also encouraged to participate in the distribution.
  9. Children who are absent during a RIF Distribution have the opportunity to select a book at another time. No teacher or other student will choose a book for them.
  10. They get the help they need by contacting the District RIF coordinator Nancy Chisholm.

NOTES FROM NANCY

NANCY'S NOTES  9/25/07

Hello Everyone,

For those of you who need extra books at any time throughout the year, let me know HOW MANY and what GRADE LEVEL and I will ship them to you via Storehouse truck. If you prefer, you can visit us here at 1930 Como and go shopping for the books that you think would be a good fit for your students.

For those of you who have too many books, it is OK to have the kids select 2 or even 3 books. You are also free to use any extra books as prizes or incentives.

Any photos of your kids on distribution day, notes or "quotable quotes" from the kids that I can send along to RIF would be most appreciated. It lets them know just how important the RIF program is to our students.

Just a gentle reminder.....All RIF books are to be chosen by the students for them to take home and keep without adult interference. This applies to students who are absent on the day of distribution. Books must NOT be selected for them.

Thank you all again for making the RIF program such a huge success in our district. We couldn't do it without you. Any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 603-4925 or nancy.chisholm@spps.org.  Randi Lundberg is no longer involved with the RIF program, so please contact me instead. Thank you.

Nancy
